Norwich is known for its festivals, and that includes the 21st Gus Macker Tournament set for this weekend July 9-10 on Main Street downtown.
Norwich has the Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival that features regional musicians and artists, the Chenango Blues Festival that attracts nationally renowned artists, the Fall Festival affectionately known as The Pumpkin Fest and The Antique Car Show that highlights classic cars. Add Macker, and you have something for just about everybody and anybody, which is precisely who can play in a Macker.
Make sure to thank the great group of community minded people who help make the Macker happen. The games will be played on East Main Street with the best set of volunteers anywhere, and the tournament is family friendly and benefits your local Norwich Family YMCA and many other community organizations and businesses downtown.
Basketball festivities this weekend include a dunk contest, a 3-point shot contest and the Dream Court where the young Mackers get special court attention.
Remember the Tom Schwanns Memorial Kids Court honors the late sports writer who was so much a part of our community, and all proceeds from that court go to the Relay for Life battle against cancer.
Note there will be fun things like bounce houses for the youngsters not quite ready for a 3-on-3 game, food and beverage vendors, downtown’s shops and restaurants and more. It’s a festival!
